A Skim Scan works by detecting unauthorized skimming or “shimming” devices that criminals insert into card slots. The scan takes only seconds; the device is inserted and removed just like a credit card. A green light signals a clean machine, while an alert indicates that a potential skimmer may be present.
The new Skim Scan service will operate through routine inspections conducted by Volunteers in Policing at gas pumps, ATMs, parking meters, and other point-of-sale terminals that are unattended. If a suspected skimming device is detected during a scan, officers will be immediately notified to remove and collect the equipment for further investigation. Business owners will also be alerted to the findings and provided with guidance on how to better secure their payment terminals against future tampering.
Community members are encouraged to stay vigilant when using card readers by:
· Choosing pumps closest to the storefront whenever possible
· Avoiding loose or damaged keypads or card slots
· Using tap-to-pay or mobile wallet options when available
