Ventura, Calif. - Emergencies can strike without warning, and the first hour is critical for protecting lives and property. This September, in recognition of National Preparedness Month, the Ventura Police Department is proud to launch “Ready Your Ventura Neighborhood,” a program that equips neighbors to act fast, save lives, and protect their community.
The program guides residents through a step-by-step process to strengthen neighborhood resilience. Participants map their block, identify neighbors with special skills, knowledge, and tools, and pinpoint key areas such as gas and water shut-offs. Neighborhoods also establish a safe gathering site for wounded residents or those with access and functional needs (AFN) and assign critical roles for those involved.
“Preparedness isn’t just about supplies, it’s about people,” said Mack Douglass, City of Ventura Emergency Services Manager. “During a major disaster, first responders simply can’t be everywhere at once. That’s why neighbors who plan, communicate, and act together can save lives. When neighbors are prepared, the whole community is safer.”
Workshops led by the City’s Emergency Services Manager provide hands-on guidance and residents also learn key terminology so they can respond quickly and confidently.
The program builds on existing community preparedness initiatives like Ventura's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, a six-week program hosted twice a year.
