Community Memorial Healthcare Expands Cancer Program, Bringing Comprehensive Cancer Care to Ventura

Community Memorial Healthcare is proud to announce the significant expansion of its Cancer Program, featuring a new, experienced team of hematology and medical oncologists dedicated to providing patients with timely, individualized, and coordinated treatment plans. This expansion ensures local access to leading-edge cancer treatment through a new infusion center, minimizing the need for patients to travel out of the area for specialty services or ongoing cancer care.

According to the National Cancer Institute, a clear, personalized treatment plan is one of the most important predictors of improved cancer outcomes. Patients who begin coordinated care within the first month after diagnosis experience significantly higher survival rates. Community Memorial’s expanded program is designed to meet this critical need, offering a multidisciplinary approach that addresses the medical, emotional, and social needs of every patient.

“A personalized and comprehensive treatment plan created soon after diagnosis is essential—it provides clarity, confidence, and a clear path forward,” said Community Memorial Healthcare’s Director of Ambulatory Services and Cancer Center, Tracie Funk. “At Community Memorial, we make sure every patient receives coordinated, timely care from a dedicated team, so no one has to navigate their health journey alone.”

Community Memorial’s expanded Cancer Program features:

·       New, Local Expertise: The new medical team is comprised of highly experienced hematologists and oncologists, alongside specialty-trained nurses and support staff, providing patients access to the newest and most innovative treatments right in Ventura County.

·       Reduced Patient Burden: By offering specialty care locally, Community Memorial eliminates the logistical, transportation, and financial concerns often associated with traveling to distant centers in Los Angeles or Santa Barbara.

·       Multidisciplinary Team Approach: Every complex patient case is reviewed weekly at the Tumor Board conference by a team of specialists, including surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists, and pathologists. This collaboration ensures all best treatment options are considered, leading to better adherence to evidence-based guidelines and success rates.

·       Dedicated Patient Support: Community Memorial offers robust resources to help patients and families cope with the unique challenges of a cancer diagnosis. These resources include:

o   Cancer Nurse Navigators: Specialty nurses who act as patient advocates – coordinating care, educating on treatment options, managing symptoms, and providing emotional support.

o   Licensed Clinical Social Workers: Provide psychosocial support, counseling, and assistance with practical needs like managing emotional distress, financial concerns, and navigating the healthcare system.

o   Cancer Resource Center: Provides free classes and support groups, including yoga, Tai Chi, art meditation, Reiki, and survivorship programs, along with a cancer resource library and wig bank

“We’re proud to bring world-class cancer care and expertise close to home — delivering the advanced treatments, leading specialists, and compassionate support our community deserves, right where it matters most,” Funk added.
